Question Number 12

Here's a question from the reader's guide included in American Fuji:

Do you believe Gaby to be the strongest character among the Westerners (Lester, Michael, and Alex) even though she is regarded as a "sad woman" in Japan? Why or why not?

I'd like to know what you think!

I thought of Gabby as...resolute. Accepting. Not willing to compromise her core values. I don't know if I'd necessarily equate those things with strength, although now that you ask, I definitely don't think of her as weak in any way.

I guess it's that those other qualities came through most clearly for me.

Gaby is definetely the stronger character. Not just shows a great resolve to face her own health condition, and the alternatives she has to confront, she also is convinced that Japan is the place where she belongs. She sees the country and its people not as something extrange and therefore flawed, but as the product of a different culture. She knows she is the outsider, and does her best to adapt to the country she has learned to love and respect.
